Cross and Resurrection

Atonement accomplished, death defeated, and the risen Christ vindicated

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the decisive saving acts by which God fulfills His promises, atones for sin, defeats death, inaugurates new creation, and establishes the gospel proclaimed to all nations.

Overview

In the cross and resurrection, Jesus accomplishes redemption by bearing sin, satisfying the righteous judgment of God, and rising bodily as the firstfruits of the new creation. This stage is the decisive climax of the gospel story: the promised King, Servant, Son, and Lamb gives Himself for sinners and is raised in victory.

What God Is Doing

God gives His Son as the once-for-all sacrifice for sin, fulfills the Scriptures concerning the suffering and vindication of the Messiah, and establishes the foundation of the new covenant through Christ's blood. At the cross, God judges sin, displays mercy, reconciles sinners to Himself, and defeats the powers of death and evil. In the resurrection, God vindicates Jesus as the righteous Son, enthrones Him in victory, opens the way of life, and declares that the promised restoration has begun in Him.

What the People of God Face

The people of God face the scandal and glory of a crucified Messiah: the disciples are exposed in fear, confusion, denial, and unbelief, yet they are gathered again by the risen Lord in mercy. Israel's leaders reject Jesus, the nations participate in His death, and the covenant people are shown that human strength, religious privilege, and law-keeping cannot secure life. Those who belong to Christ receive forgiveness, peace, restored calling, and the summons to witness that the crucified one has been raised.

Canonical Movement
Fulfills

This stage fulfills the promises, patterns, and prophetic hopes of the prior stages: the offspring who crushes the serpent, the Abrahamic blessing for the nations, the Passover deliverance, the sacrificial system, the Davidic king, the suffering servant, and the promised new covenant forgiveness.

Anticipates

This stage anticipates Pentecost and the church, where the risen and exalted Christ pours out the Spirit and sends His witnesses to the nations. It also anticipates the final resurrection and consummation, because Christ's resurrection is the firstfruits of the life that will be revealed fully at His return.
