Jeremiah 23:16-22

The Lord Exposes Prophets He Did Not Send

Messages that promise peace without repentance do not come from God and lead people further into destruction.

Scripture Text

23:16 This is what the Lord of Hosts says: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They are filling you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.

23:17 They keep saying to those who despise Me, ‘The Lord says that you will have peace,’ and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, ‘No harm will come to you.’

23:18 But which of them has stood in the council of the Lord to see and hear His word? Who has given heed to His word and obeyed it?

23:19 Behold, the storm of the Lord has gone out with fury, a whirlwind swirling down upon the heads of the wicked.

23:20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back until He has fully accomplished the purposes of His heart. In the days to come you will understand this clearly.

23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.

23:22 But if they had stood in My council, they would have proclaimed My words to My people and turned them back from their evil ways and deeds.”

Anchor

Messages that promise peace without repentance do not come from God and lead people further into destruction.

False prophets who have not stood in the council of the Lord proclaim deceptive messages of peace that strengthen the rebellion of the people and prevent them from turning from sin.

Crucial Turning Point

The chapter moves from judgment on false shepherds, to the gathering of the remnant, to the promise of the righteous Branch, to a sustained indictment of false prophets who corrupt the people by speaking lies in the Lord's name.

Jeremiah 23 argues that the Lord will not abandon his flock to failed shepherds or lying prophets. He judges leaders who scatter, corrupt, and deceive his people, but he also promises to gather his remnant and raise up the righteous Davidic Branch who will reign in justice and righteousness. True leadership and true prophecy are both measured by the Lord's own character and word. The righteous King saves and secures the flock, while the true word of God exposes lies, shatters hardness, and calls sinners to repentance.

Theological logic
  1. The people belong to the LORD, not to the leaders who misuse them.
  2. Failed shepherds are accountable for scattering and neglecting the flock.
  3. Restoration comes from the LORD's initiative.
  4. The righteous Davidic King is the answer to failed kingship.
  5. False prophecy strengthens rebellion by promising peace apart from repentance.
  6. True prophecy comes from standing in the LORD's council and speaking his word.
  7. God's true word is not weak speech but active power.
  8. Twisting divine speech is a grave offense against the living God.

Watch Out

  • Do not interpret prophetic visions from imagination as legitimate revelation from God.
  • Do not assume that messages promising peace automatically come from the Lord.
  • Do not separate true prophetic ministry from calling people to repentance.
  • Do not ignore the importance of standing in the divine council as the source of true revelation.
  • The passage does not condemn prophecy itself but condemns fabricated prophecy.
  • The peace promised by false prophets was political and superficial rather than covenantal restoration.
  • The concept of standing in the divine council reflects authentic prophetic revelation rather than mystical speculation.
  • Jeremiah’s warning is directed toward covenant accountability within Israel.

Invitation Arc

  • Not every spiritual message claiming divine authority truly originates from God.
  • Faithful teaching must be grounded in God’s revealed word rather than human imagination.
  • Spiritual deception often appears attractive because it promises peace without repentance.
  • God’s word ultimately exposes false assurances and calls people to righteousness.
  • Discernment within the community of faith protects believers from spiritual harm.
Response
  • Scripture-tested listening - Examine every spiritual message by the revealed word of God rather than by emotional appeal or religious vocabulary.
  • Repentance-seeking ministry - Measure ministry not by applause alone but by whether it helps people turn from evil and trust the Lord.
  • Flock-conscious leadership - Remember that those under one's care belong to the Lord and must be protected, nourished, and guided faithfully.
  • Reverent speech - Avoid careless claims of divine authority and speak God's word with humility, accuracy, and fear of the Lord.
  • Gospel-rooted righteousness - Look to Christ as 'The Lord Our Righteous Savior' rather than resting in self-made righteousness or false assurance.
  • Holy trembling before the Word - Receive Scripture as fire and hammer, not as decoration for human preference.

Canonical Thread

  • Chapter Summary : When kings and prophets fail the flock, the Lord promises the righteous Branch and exposes every false word by the fire of his own true word.

Gospel Clarity

Jeremiah exposes the danger of leaders who promise peace without confronting sin. The gospel proclaims true peace through Jesus Christ, who calls sinners to repentance and offers reconciliation with God through His atoning death and resurrection.
