1 Corinthians 12:4-7
Different gifts, the same God, for the good of the whole church.
4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord.
6 There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.
Different gifts, the same God, for the good of the whole church.
Paul explains that spiritual gifts originate from the same triune God and are given for the common good of the church.
Having established that the Holy Spirit leads believers to confess Jesus as Lord, Paul begins explaining how spiritual gifts operate within the church. The Corinthians were tempted to elevate certain experiences above others, creating confusion and pride. Paul counters this by emphasizing that all gifts originate from the same divine source and are intended to benefit the whole body. This teaching prepares the foundation for the extended body metaphor that follows later in the chapter.
The Corinthian church struggled with status divisions and competition for recognition. These cultural patterns likely shaped how believers viewed spiritual gifts, leading some to elevate dramatic manifestations above other forms of service.
One Spirit, Many Gifts, and One Body in Christ
The Holy Spirit gives diverse gifts to believers for the common good, joining them into one body in Christ so that no member may boast, despair, or divide, but all may serve in mutual dependence under the lordship of Jesus.
