1 Corinthians 12:8-11
One Spirit distributes many gifts for the building up of the church.
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
9 to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit;
10 and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages.
11 But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
One Spirit distributes many gifts for the building up of the church.
Paul lists several spiritual gifts to demonstrate the diversity of the Spirit’s work while emphasizing that the same Spirit distributes them according to His will.
After affirming that the Spirit gives gifts for the common good, Paul provides examples of how those gifts appear within the church. The Corinthians had become fascinated with certain dramatic manifestations, particularly tongues, but Paul deliberately lists a range of gifts to demonstrate diversity within unity. His emphasis remains on the Spirit as the source and distributor. This prepares the reader for the body metaphor that follows, where Paul will show that each member contributes to the whole.
The Corinthian church struggled with spiritual pride and competition, particularly regarding dramatic manifestations such as tongues. Paul’s teaching reframes spiritual gifts as diverse expressions of the Spirit meant to build up the church rather than elevate individuals.
One Spirit, Many Gifts, and One Body in Christ
The Holy Spirit gives diverse gifts to believers for the common good, joining them into one body in Christ so that no member may boast, despair, or divide, but all may serve in mutual dependence under the lordship of Jesus.
