1 Timothy 6:20-21 (WEB)

20 Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge,

21 which some profess, and thus have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

Central Idea

Paul concludes the letter by urging Timothy to guard the entrusted gospel, avoid irreverent chatter and false claims to knowledge, and recognize that deviation from the truth leads to wandering from the faith.

Authorial Intent

To solemnly charge Timothy with the preservation of apostolic truth and warn against intellectual distortions that masquerade as advanced knowledge.

Literary Context

These verses function as the concluding exhortation of the letter. Paul returns to a theme that has appeared throughout 1 Timothy: the safeguarding of the apostolic message against false teaching. The final words reinforce Timothy's responsibility as a steward of the truth.

Historical Context

Early Christian communities faced pressure from teachers who blended the gospel with speculative philosophies or mystical ideas. Such teachings often claimed to offer deeper knowledge beyond the apostolic message. Paul's warning anticipates later developments that would resemble early forms of gnostic speculation.
