Colossians 2:1–5
Christ contains all true wisdom, and believers must stand firm in Him to resist persuasive deception.
1 For I desire to have you know how greatly I struggle for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
2 that their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,
3 in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden.
4 Now I say this that no one may delude you with persuasiveness of speech.
5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in the spirit, rejoicing and seeing your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
Christ contains all true wisdom, and believers must stand firm in Him to resist persuasive deception.
To express pastoral concern for the believers’ stability and to urge them toward unified love, assured understanding, and firm rootedness in Christ as the sole source of wisdom.
Colossians 2:1-5 continues Paul’s description of his ministry from Colossians 1:24-29. He has just explained that he labors and struggles to proclaim Christ and present everyone mature in him. Now he specifies that this struggle includes the Colossians, the Laodiceans, and others who have not personally seen him. The passage forms the immediate bridge into the letter’s major warning section in Colossians 2:6-23.
Fullness in Christ and Freedom from Christ-Plus Religion
Because all fullness dwells in Christ and believers are complete in him, the church must continue in him and reject every Christ-plus system that promises wisdom, holiness, or spiritual power apart from him.
