Exodus

Exodus 40:34-38

The glory of the Lord fills the tabernacle, and the cloud and fire of His presence guide Israel throughout their journeys.

Exodus 40:34-38 (WEB)

34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and Yahweh’s glory filled the tabernacle.

35 Moses wasn’t able to enter into the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud stayed on it, and Yahweh’s glory filled the tabernacle.

36 When the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys;

37 but if the cloud wasn’t taken up, then they didn’t travel until the day that it was taken up.

38 For the cloud of Yahweh was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

Central Idea

The glory of the LORD fills the tabernacle, and the cloud and fire of his presence guide Israel throughout their journeys.

Authorial Intent

To narrate the climactic filling of the completed tabernacle by the cloud and glory of the LORD, showing that the LORD has taken up his dwelling among Israel and will guide their journeys by cloud and fire.

Literary Context

Exodus 40:17-33 narrated Moses' obedient erection of the tabernacle according to the LORD's command. Exodus 40:34-38 gives the divine response: the cloud covers the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD fills the tabernacle, and the cloud/fire presence becomes Israel's guide throughout their journeys. This ending completes the movement from oppression in Egypt, to covenant at Sinai, to God's dwelling among his people.

Historical Context

Moses has completed setting up the tabernacle exactly as the LORD commanded. After construction, inspection, setup, arrangement, altar service, washing, and courtyard completion, the LORD responds by filling the tabernacle with his glory.
