Jeremiah 21:8-10 (WEB)

8 “You shall say to this people, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

9 He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will escape with his life.

10 For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good,” says Yahweh. “It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.” ’

Central Idea

When judgment has been decreed, survival requires submitting to God’s appointed instrument rather than resisting His will.

Authorial Intent

To present the LORD’s stark covenant choice before the inhabitants of Jerusalem during the Babylonian siege: remain in the city and face death, or surrender and live.

Literary Context

Jeremiah 21:8–10 continues the message delivered to King Zedekiah during the Babylonian siege. After declaring that God himself will fight against Jerusalem (21:1–7), the Lord now presents the inhabitants with a sobering decision. This passage marks a turning point where survival depends on submitting to God’s judgment rather than resisting it.
