Jeremiah 22:18-19
Corrupt leadership that rejects God’s covenant results not only in judgment but in public disgrace.
18 Therefore Yahweh says concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “They won’t lament for him, saying, ‘Ah my brother!’ or, ‘Ah sister!’ They won’t lament for him, saying ‘Ah lord!’ or, ‘Ah his glory!’
19 He will be buried with the burial of a donkey, drawn and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.”
Corrupt leadership that rejects God’s covenant results not only in judgment but in public disgrace.
To pronounce the LORD’s judgment upon King Jehoiakim, declaring that his death will not be honored with royal mourning but will be disgraceful like the disposal of a dead animal.
Jeremiah 22:18–19 concludes the prophetic denunciation of Jehoiakim begun in Jeremiah 22:13–17. After exposing the king’s exploitation and injustice, the Lord now reveals the shameful fate awaiting him. The message contrasts sharply with the honor normally given to deceased kings.
