Jeremiah 31:35-37
The permanence of Israel before the Lord is anchored in the same divine authority that governs the sun, moon, and sea.
35 Yahweh, who gives the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, who stirs up the sea, so that its waves roar; Yahweh of Armies is his name, says:
36 “If these ordinances depart from before me,” says Yahweh, “then the offspring of Israel also will cease from being a nation before me forever.”
37 Yahweh says: “If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, then I will also cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done,” says Yahweh.
The permanence of Israel before the LORD is anchored in the same divine authority that governs the sun, moon, and sea.
To assure Israel that the LORD’s covenant commitment to them is as secure and enduring as the fixed order of creation.
Jeremiah 31:35–37 follows the announcement of the new covenant (31:31–34). After promising internal transformation and forgiveness, the Lord reinforces the permanence of his covenant purposes by appealing to the stability of creation. This passage assures the people that the covenant promises cannot be annulled despite Israel’s past rebellion.
Jeremiah speaks during the period leading to Judah’s exile, when national collapse seemed inevitable. The Lord reassures the people that despite judgment, Israel’s covenant identity will endure.
Everlasting Love, Restored Joy, and the New Covenant
The LORD who scattered Israel will gather, comfort, forgive, renew, and bind his people to himself through a New Covenant written on the heart.
