Jeremiah 31:38-40 (WEB)

38 “Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that the city will be built to Yahweh from the tower of Hananel to the gate of the corner.

39 The measuring line will go out further straight onward to the hill Gareb, and will turn toward Goah.

40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields to the brook Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate toward the east, will be holy to Yahweh. It will not be plucked up or thrown down any more forever.”

Central Idea

The LORD will rebuild Jerusalem and consecrate the entire city as holy, demonstrating the permanence of His restoration.

Authorial Intent

To declare that Jerusalem will be rebuilt for the LORD and permanently set apart as holy, never again to be overthrown.

Literary Context

Jeremiah 31:38–40 concludes the restoration promises surrounding the new covenant declaration. After affirming the permanence of Israel's covenant identity (31:35–37), the Lord promises that Jerusalem itself will be rebuilt and consecrated. This passage transitions the restoration vision from covenant relationship to tangible renewal of the covenant city.

Historical Context

Jerusalem faced destruction by Babylon as a result of covenant rebellion. Jeremiah's prophecy anticipates a future rebuilding of the city following exile.
