Jude

Jude 1:8–10

Spiritual arrogance that rejects God-ordained authority exposes a corrupted heart.

Jude 1:8–10 (WEB)

8 Yet in the same way, these also in their dreaming defile the flesh, despise authority, and slander celestial beings.

9 But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”

10 But these speak evil of whatever things they don’t know. They are destroyed in these things that they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason.

Central Idea

Spiritual arrogance that rejects God-ordained authority exposes a corrupted heart.

Authorial Intent

To expose the moral corruption and arrogant rebellion of false teachers who reject authority and slander spiritual realities.

Literary Context

These verses apply Jude’s prior judgment examples (vv. 5–7) directly to the present infiltrators (v. 8: “In the very same way”). Jude transitions from historical proof to present diagnosis, exposing the teachers’ moral corruption, authority-rejection, and irreverent speech. The Michael contrast (v. 9) underscores the difference between humble restraint and presumptuous spiritual arrogance, culminating in Jude’s conclusion that they speak beyond understanding and are undone by corrupt instincts (v. 10).
