Leviticus 14:54-57 (WEB)

54 This is the law for any plague of leprosy, and for an itch,

55 and for the destructive mildew of a garment, and for a house,

56 and for a swelling, and for a scab, and for a bright spot;

57 to teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean. This is the law of leprosy.

Central Idea

God provides clear instruction so His people can discern between what is clean and what is unclean.

Authorial Intent

This passage summarizes and concludes the extended legislation on skin disease, mildew, and related impurities, clarifying the purpose of these laws in distinguishing between clean and unclean.

Literary Context

This passage functions as the concluding colophon to Leviticus 13:1-14:53. It gathers the diagnostic and cleansing instructions for persons, garments, and houses into a formal summary of priestly discernment.

Historical Context

Leviticus 14:54-57 concludes a major purity-law section addressed to Israel under the Sinai covenant. The priesthood is charged with distinguishing clean from unclean in relation to skin conditions, fabrics, leather articles, houses, and visible marks. These laws preserve covenant order around the tabernacle and the camp, and later around settled life in the land.
