Authority of Christ's Name and Unity in Allegiance
Kingdom loyalty is measured by faithfulness to Christ’s name, not exclusive affiliation.
Mark 9:38–41 (BSB)
38 John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone else driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not accompany us.”
39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus replied. “For no one who performs a miracle in My name can turn around and speak evil of Me.
40 For whoever is not against us is for us.
41 Indeed, if anyone gives you even a cup of water because you bear the name of Christ, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
What is the big idea of Mark 9:38–41?
Kingdom loyalty is measured by faithfulness to Christ’s name, not exclusive affiliation.
How does Mark 9:38–41 point to Christ?
Only through the name of Jesus—crucified and risen—does salvation come; all genuine allegiance to Him rests on His redemptive work and receives eternal reward.
How does Mark 9:38–41 relate to the life and ministry of Jesus?
John reports to Jesus, 'Teacher' (Διδάσκαλε, Didaskale), 'we saw someone casting out demons in Your name' (ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἐκβάλλοντα δαιμόνια, en tō onomati sou ekballonta daimonia), and we tried to prevent him (ἐκωλύομεν αὐτόν, ekōlyomen auton) because he was not following us (οὐκ ἠκολούθει ἡμῖν, ouk ēkolouthei hēmin). Jesus responds, 'Do not stop him' (Μὴ κωλύετε αὐτόν, Mē kōlyete auton), for no one who does a mighty work (δύναμιν, dynamin) in My name will soon afterward be able to speak evil of Me (κακολογῆσαι, kakologēsai). He declares, 'Whoever is not against us is for us' (ὃς γὰρ οὐκ ἔστιν καθ᾽ ἡμῶν, ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἐστιν, hos gar ouk estin kath’ hēmōn, hyper hēmōn estin). Even giving a cup of water (ποτήριον ὕδατος, potērion hydatos) because you belong to Christ (ὅτι Χριστοῦ ἐστε, hoti Christou este) will not lose its reward (οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθόν αὐτοῦ, ou mē apolesē ton misthon autou). The life of Christ here reveals that kingdom allegiance is defined by loyalty to His name, not by tribal affiliation, and that even the smallest act done for Him carries eternal weight.
Authorial Intent
To teach that allegiance to Christ’s name defines kingdom inclusion and that even small acts done in His name are rewarded.
Literary Context
This passage follows the teaching on humility and receiving the least (9:33–37), expanding the theme of inclusive kingdom participation grounded in Christ’s authority.
Historical Context
Exorcism in the name (ὄνομα, onoma) signified delegated authority. Jewish sectarianism often emphasized group boundaries. Jesus corrects narrow exclusivism while maintaining allegiance to Himself.
