Proverbs 18:11

Wealth promises security but often produces only an imagined protection.

Proverbs 18:11 (WEB)

11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.

Central Idea

Wealth promises security but often produces only an imagined protection.

Authorial Intent

To expose the false confidence that wealth creates and to contrast perceived security with true refuge in the Lord.

Literary Context

Proverbs 18 is a collection of short, tightly packed sayings that train the heart by contrasts and vivid images. Verse 10 has just set the LORD’s name as the true “strong tower” into which the righteous run for safety. Verse 11 responds with a counter-image: the rich person’s “strong city” is not the LORD but his own wealth. The imagery of “fortified city” and “high wall” evokes the ancient world’s most visible symbols of security and stability. The final qualifier—“in his imagination”—is the interpretive hinge: the wall is strong primarily in perception. The next proverb (v.12) warns that pride precedes destruction, reinforcing how false security and self-exaltation can converge.
