Proverbs 18:18

The casting of lots can bring resolution to disputes that might otherwise continue in conflict.

Proverbs 18 contains a cluster of sayings about speech, conflict, and social consequences. The immediate context addresses how disputes are handled: a claim can sound right until it is examined (18:17), and damaged relationships can become harder to restore than a fortified city (18:19). Within that flow, 18:18 commends a dispute-ending mechanism that prevents endless contention. The verse assumes a communal setting where a recognized procedure can be used to decide between parties. It highlights that quarrels can be intensified by stubbornness and power, and so resolution sometimes requires a process both sides will accept. The proverb’s concern is not gambling on chance but stopping conflict through an orderly, acknowledged decision.

The proverb reflects an ancient Near Eastern and Israelite practice in which lots were used as a recognized means of reaching a binding decision when human contention could not easily be resolved. Within Israel’s covenant life, the use of lots could function as an appeal to God’s providential rule over outcomes (cf. the canonical witness that the LORD directs the decision of the lot).
