Proverbs 20:25 follows verse 24, which emphasized God’s sovereignty over human steps. Now the focus shifts to human responsibility in speech and commitment. The connection is significant. While God directs life, individuals are still accountable for their words and promises. This verse continues the theme of speech, moving from gossip and dishonor earlier in the chapter to the seriousness of vows before God.
In ancient Israel, vows were often made in religious contexts, such as offerings or dedications to God. These vows were binding and expected to be fulfilled. Rash or impulsive vows could create significant difficulty, as failing to fulfill them was considered a serious offense.
