Wise Counsel Gives Strength for Battle

True strength is found in wisdom and wise counsel rather than mere physical power.

Proverbs 24:5–6 reveals that true strength comes from wisdom and wise counsel. In the gospel, Christ is revealed as the wisdom of God who guides His people into victory and faithful living.

Jesus is the wisdom and power of God. He never acts from foolish impulse or isolated pride. He does the Father’s will, speaks what the Father gives Him, and walks in perfect divine wisdom. In His mission, He defeats sin, death, and the devil not by worldly force but through obedient suffering, resurrection power, and the counsel of God’s eternal plan. He also forms His church as a body, not as isolated individuals, distributing gifts, elders, teachers, and counselors for the building up of His people. In Christ, believers learn that true victory is secured through humble dependence, wise counsel, Spirit-given discernment, and the Lord’s strength.

To teach that wisdom and wise counsel provide greater strength than physical power.

Proverbs 24:5-6 follows Proverbs 24:3-4, where wisdom builds a house, understanding establishes it, and knowledge fills its rooms with treasures. The progression is significant. Wisdom not only builds houses; it also strengthens people for conflict and decision-making. A wise house must be built, established, filled, defended, and led. Proverbs 24:1-2 warned against envying the wicked because their hearts plot violence and their lips speak trouble. Proverbs 24:5-6 offers the righteous alternative to violent plotting: wise strength, knowledge-guided capacity, strategic counsel, and many advisers. The wicked plot harm in secret, but the wise seek guidance openly and humbly.

In ancient Israel and the wider ancient Near East, military action required strategy, counsel, timing, logistics, knowledge of terrain, assessment of strength, and wise leadership. Rash warfare could destroy households, cities, and nations. Proverbs 24:5-6 uses the language of strength and battle to teach a wider wisdom principle: knowledge increases strength, and important action requires guidance and many advisers. In royal and civic life, counsel was essential for governance, justice, defense, and national survival.
