Proverbs 29:5

Flattery disguises deception and ultimately harms the one who receives it.

To warn that flattering speech toward a neighbor is not harmless praise but a deceptive snare that endangers relationships.

Proverbs 29:5 follows Proverbs 29:4, where justice establishes a land but bribery tears it down. Verse 5 continues the theme of corruption through hidden means. Bribes corrupt judgment through gifts; flattery corrupts judgment through words. Both create distortion. Both work by offering something pleasing. Both can make a person less able to see truth. The verse also reaches back to Proverbs 28:23, where faithful rebuke is better than a flattering tongue. Proverbs 29:5 sharpens the warning by showing what flattery does: it spreads a net under the neighbor’s feet. Proverbs 29 is therefore developing a cluster around leadership, justice, correction, and truthful speech. Public righteousness requires not only clean courts but clean words.

In ancient Israel, flattery could operate in royal courts, patron-client relationships, legal disputes, business dealings, friendships, family systems, and prophetic settings. Smooth words were especially dangerous around rulers and influential people because they could distort judgment, protect pride, and silence necessary correction. Proverbs 29:5 uses hunting imagery to show that flattery is not neutral speech but a concealed snare.
