Praise the Covenant Lord: Security, Provision, and Revealed Word
Jerusalem must praise the Lord because he strengthens her security, blesses her people, governs creation with absolute authority, and uniquely reveals his word, giving covenant knowledge that no other nation possesses.
Psalm 147:12-20 (BSB)
12 Exalt the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses the children within you.
14 He makes peace at your borders; He fills you with the finest wheat.
15 He sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly.
16 He spreads the snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes;
17 He casts forth His hail like pebbles. Who can withstand His icy blast?
18 He sends forth His word and melts them; He unleashes His winds, and the waters flow.
19 He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and judgments to Israel.
20 He has done this for no other nation; they do not know His judgments. Hallelujah!
What is the big idea of Psalm 147:12-20?
Jerusalem must praise the LORD because he strengthens her security, blesses her people, governs creation with absolute authority, and uniquely reveals his word, giving covenant knowledge that no other nation possesses.
How does Psalm 147:12-20 point to Christ?
Psalm 147:12-20 finds its fullest expression in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. The God who sent his word to govern creation has now spoken definitively through his Son. Christ secures his people, provides true peace, and establishes a new covenant community. Through him, the privilege once centered in Israel extends to all who believe, as the word of God goes to the nations. The peace within the borders becomes peace with God through the cross, and the revelation given in statutes is fulfilled in the living Word. Thus, the call to praise reaches its climax in the gospel, where God's word not only commands but redeems.
Authorial Intent
To summon Jerusalem to praise the LORD for his covenant blessings, including protection, provision, sovereign control over creation, and the unique gift of his revealed word.
