King of Judah, son of Manasseh

Who is Amon in the Bible?

Amon was the fifteenth king of Judah and son of King Manasseh, ruling for only two years before his assassination (2 Kings 21:19-24). He ascended to the throne at age twenty-two but rejected the spiritual reforms his father had eventually embraced, instead returning to idolatry and evil practices that displeased the Lord. His reign was cut short when his own servants conspired against him and killed him in his palace, though the people of Judah executed the conspirators and installed his young son Josiah as king in his place (2 Chronicles 33:24-25). Amon's brief and wicked reign marks a spiritual low point before his son Josiah initiated major religious reforms, and he is also listed in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew's Gospel, demonstrating God's preservation of the messianic line despite the unfaithfulness of individual kings.

Biography

Amon was the son of Manasseh and the 15th king of Judah. He began his reign at the age of 22 and ruled for two years in Jerusalem. Amon followed the evil practices of his father Manasseh, worshiping idols and doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not humble himself before the Lord as his father had done.

Amon's servants conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace. However, the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against King Amon, and they made his son Josiah king in his place. Amon was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza.

The prophets Jeremiah and Zephaniah began their ministries during the reign of Josiah, Amon's son. Amon is also mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew.
