Barkos בַּרְקוֹס
Ancestor of a family of temple servants who returned from exile.
Who is Barkos in the Bible?
Barkos was the ancestor of a family of temple servants, or Nethinim, who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile (Ezra 2:53, Nehemiah 7:55). The temple servants were assigned to assist the Levites in maintaining and serving the temple, performing various support roles in Israel's worship. His family appears in the official registry of those who journeyed back to Judah after the exile, when the Jewish people were rebuilding their community and the temple. Though Barkos himself is not described individually, his inclusion in these lists reflects the significance of all groups who participated in the restoration of Jerusalem and the renewal of temple worship after decades of captivity.
Biography
Barkos is mentioned in Ezr.2.53 and Neh.7.55 as the ancestor of a family of temple servants (Nethinim) who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile. The temple servants were a group of people assigned to assist the Levites in the maintenance and service of the temple. The lists in Ezra and Nehemiah record the names of the families who returned to Judah to resettle and rebuild the temple.
