Eliezer אֱלִיעֶ֫זֶר
Of Damascus, Abraham's servant and potential heir.
Who is Eliezer in the Bible?
Eliezer of Damascus was Abraham's faithful servant and steward of his household, mentioned in Genesis 15:2 as Abraham's potential heir before the birth of his sons. When Abraham expressed his concern about having no children, he identified Eliezer as the one who would inherit his estate. However, God promised Abraham that he would father his own son, ultimately fulfilling this promise through both Ishmael and Isaac. Eliezer's brief appearance in Scripture is significant because it highlights Abraham's faith and the certainty of God's promise, as the servant's role as heir was ultimately superseded by the birth of Abraham's biological descendants through whom God's covenant would continue.
Biography
Eliezer of Damascus was a servant in Abraham's household who was mentioned as a potential heir to Abraham's estate before the birth of Ishmael and Isaac (Gen.15.2). In a conversation with God, Abraham lamented his lack of children and named Eliezer as the steward of his house and the one who would inherit his possessions. However, God promised Abraham that he would have a son of his own, and this promise was fulfilled through the births of Ishmael and Isaac.
