An overseer of the temple servants during Nehemiah's time.

Who is Gishpa in the Bible?

Gishpa was an overseer of the Nethinim, or temple servants, during the time of Nehemiah's restoration of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. Mentioned in Nehemiah 11:21, Gishpa is listed among those who lived on the hill of Ophel and managed the work of the temple servants. The Nethinim were descendants of the Gibeonites, originally spared by Joshua, who had been assigned by David and the princes to assist the Levites in maintaining and serving the temple. Gishpa's role reflects the organized structure of temple operations during the post-exilic period, highlighting how even support personnel were carefully overseen to ensure proper temple function.

Biography

Gishpa is mentioned briefly in Neh.11.21 as one of the overseers of the Nethinim, or temple servants, who lived on the hill of Ophel in Jerusalem. The Nethinim were a group of people assigned to assist the Levites in the maintenance and service of the temple. They were originally Gibeonites who had been spared by Joshua (Joshua 9) and were later designated by David and the princes to serve in the temple (Ezr.8.20). Gishpa's role was to oversee and manage the work of the Nethinim.
