Habazziniah חֲבַצִּנְיָה

Male H2262 1 book

Grandfather of Jaazaniah, a Rechabite leader.

Who is Habazziniah in the Bible?

Habazziniah was the grandfather of Jaazaniah, a leader of the Rechabites during the time of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 35:3). The Rechabites were a nomadic tribe known for their strict adherence to the commands of their ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab, abstaining from wine, agriculture, and permanent settlements. Jeremiah brought Jaazaniah and other Rechabites into the temple and offered them wine to test their obedience to their ancestral traditions, demonstrating their faithfulness even under pressure. Their unwavering commitment to their ancestor's instructions served as a powerful contrast to the disobedience of Judah toward God's commands, making Habazziniah's lineage an example of loyalty and covenant faithfulness in Scripture.

Biography

Habazziniah is mentioned in Jer.35.3 as the grandfather of Jaazaniah, who was a leader of the Rechabites during the time of the prophet Jeremiah. The Rechabites were a nomadic tribe known for their strict adherence to the commands of their ancestor, Jonadab son of Rechab. They abstained from drinking wine, planting crops, and living in permanent dwellings (Jer.35.6-7). Jeremiah used the Rechabites' obedience to their ancestor's commands as an example to contrast with the disobedience of the people of Judah to God's commands (Jer.35.12-19).
