Hagabah חֲגָבָה
A temple servant who returned from Babylonian exile.
Who is Hagabah in the Bible?
Hagabah, also known as Hagaba, was a temple servant who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian captivity, as recorded in Ezra 2:45 and Nehemiah 7:48. The temple servants, called Nethinim, were a class of workers assigned to assist the Levites in maintaining and serving the temple, and they were likely descendants of the Gibeonites originally appointed by Joshua to tabernacle service (Joshua 9:27). Hagabah's inclusion in the list of returnees demonstrates the restoration of the temple's workforce and worship practices after the exile. His presence among those who rebuilt the temple underscores the comprehensive nature of Jerusalem's spiritual renewal following the Babylonian captivity.
Biography
Hagabah, also referred to as Hagaba, is mentioned in Ezr.2.45 and Neh.7.48 as one of the temple servants (Nethinim) who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian captivity. The temple servants were a group of people assigned to assist the Levites in the maintenance and service of the temple. They were not of Israelite descent but were likely descendants of the Gibeonites who had been assigned by Joshua to serve in the tabernacle (Jos.9.27). Hagabah and the other temple servants are listed among those who returned to help rebuild the temple and restore worship in Jerusalem after the exile.
