Who is Hivites in the Bible?

The Hivites were one of the Canaanite tribes inhabiting the land of Canaan before the Israelite conquest, descended from Canaan, the son of Ham, as mentioned in Genesis 10:17 and 1 Chronicles 1:15. They lived in various regions throughout Canaan, including areas around Shechem, Mount Hermon, and the cities of Gibeon and Beeroth. God promised to drive out the Hivites and other Canaanite peoples before the Israelites, as recorded in Exodus 3:8, 3:17, and Deuteronomy 7:1. During the conquest, the Hivites of Gibeon notably deceived Joshua into making a peace treaty with them rather than being destroyed, which demonstrated both the cunning of the native inhabitants and the complexity of Israel's settlement in the promised land.

Biography

The Hivites were one of the Canaanite people groups that inhabited the land of Canaan prior to the Israelite conquest. They are first mentioned in Gen.10.17 and 1Ch.1.15 as descendants of Canaan, the son of Ham.

The Hivites lived in various parts of Canaan, including the region around Shechem (Gen.34.2), the area near Mount Hermon (Jos.11.3), and the cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim (Jos.9.7, 17). They were among the tribes that God promised to drive out before the Israelites (Exo.3.8, 17; 13.5; 23.23, 28; 33.2; 34.11; Deu.7.1; 20.17; Jos.3.10).

During the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the Hivites of Gibeon tricked Joshua into making a peace treaty with them.
