A leader who married a foreign wife

Who is Jehiel in the Bible?

Jehiel was a descendant of Elam who returned from the Babylonian exile and became involved in the controversy over mixed marriages recorded in Ezra 10:2. As one of the men who had married a foreign wife, Jehiel violated the Mosaic Law and faced confrontation from Ezra the priest, who sought to reform the practice among the returned exiles. His case exemplifies the spiritual struggle of the post-exilic community to maintain religious purity and obedience to God's law after their return to Jerusalem. Though his name appears only briefly in Scripture, Jehiel represents the broader challenge the Jewish people faced in separating themselves from foreign influences during the restoration period.
