Jehoiarib יְהוֹיָרִיב
Head of a priestly division during David's reign
Who is Jehoiarib in the Bible?
Jehoiarib was the head of the first priestly division established by King David during his reorganization of temple worship, as recorded in 1 Chronicles 24:7. David divided the priesthood into 24 rotating groups to ensure regular and orderly service in the temple, with Jehoiarib's family assigned to the first course. The priestly divisions were determined by casting lots, and Jehoiarib's selection as the first division indicates his family held a prominent position among the priests. His descendants continued this priestly lineage and appear in later biblical records under the variant name Joiarib, with descendants still serving in the post-exilic period. This organizational system was significant to Israel's religious life, establishing a structured framework for ongoing temple worship and service that would endure for generations.
Biography
Jehoiarib is mentioned in 1Ch.24.7 as the head of the first priestly division organized by King David. As part of David's reforms, the priests were divided into 24 groups to serve in the temple on a rotating basis. The order of service was determined by casting lots, and Jehoiarib's division was selected first. This suggests that Jehoiarib and his descendants held a prominent position among the priestly families. The text does not provide any further information about Jehoiarib's background or his specific role in the priestly duties. However, the organization of the priestly divisions was a significant step in establishing a structured and efficient system for temple service, ensuring that the worship of God was carried out regularly and in an orderly manner.
