Jerioth יְרִיעוֹת
Wife of Caleb; mother of unnamed children.
Who is Jerioth in the Bible?
Jerioth was a wife of Caleb, son of Hezron, mentioned in the genealogy of Judah recorded in 1 Chronicles 2:18. She bore Caleb unnamed children, though the exact number and names are not specified in Scripture. Scholars have debated whether Jerioth was actually a second wife of Caleb or an alternative name for his first wife Azubah, as the Hebrew text is ambiguous on this point. Jerioth appears in the biblical record solely as part of Caleb's family lineage, contributing to the genealogical record of the tribe of Judah.
Biography
Jerioth is mentioned briefly in the genealogy of Judah in 1 Chronicles as one of the wives of Caleb, the son of Hezron. The passage states that Caleb had children by his wife Azubah, and after her death, he married Ephrath. It then mentions that Caleb also had children by Jerioth. The wording at 1Chr 2.18 makes it possible this was another name for Azubah who had Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.

of Azubah his wife, Jerioth." Wellhausen (De Gent. et Fam. Jud., 33) reads, "Caleb begat (children) of Azubah his wife, the daughter of Jerioth." According to English Versions of the Bible, Caleb had two wives, but the context does not bear this out. J. H. Michaelis regarded Jerioth as another name for Azubah. See Curtis, Commentary on Chronicles, 92.
