Father of Eliasaph, a Gershonite Levite

Who is Lael in the Bible?

Lael was the father of Eliasaph, a leader of the Gershonite clan of Levites during Israel's wilderness wanderings after the exodus from Egypt (Numbers 3:24). The Gershonites were assigned responsibility for the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and hangings, making them essential to maintaining the portable sanctuary. Eliasaph, Lael's son, was appointed as the chief of the Gershonite families, indicating that Lael came from a line of leadership within the priestly tribe. Though Lael himself appears only briefly in scripture, his significance lies in being the father of a tribal leader whose family helped preserve and transport the dwelling place of God during Israel's forty years in the wilderness.
