Priest involved in Joash's coronation

Who is Maaseiah in the Bible?

Maaseiah was a priest in Judah who played a crucial role in the coronation of King Joash around 835 BC, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 23:1. During the reign of the usurper queen Athaliah, who had killed the royal heirs to secure her throne, the priest Jehoiada organized a coup to restore the Davidic line and protect the young prince Joash. Maaseiah joined other priests and Levites in supporting this rebellion, which successfully overthrew Athaliah and resulted in Joash's coronation as king at age seven. His participation demonstrates the vital role the priesthood played in preserving both the religious integrity and political stability of the Kingdom of Judah during a period of dynastic crisis.
