Mattaniah מַתַּנְיָ֫הוּ
Levite, grandfather of Jahaziel, who prophesied during Jehoshaphat's reign.
Who is Mattaniah in the Bible?
Mattaniah was a Levite of Judah mentioned in 2 Chronicles 20:14 as the grandfather of the prophet Jahaziel. During King Jehoshaphat's reign, Jahaziel, filled with the Spirit of the Lord, prophesied before the king and people, encouraging them not to fear the invading armies of the Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites because the battle belonged to the Lord. Though Mattaniah himself is not described as a prophet, his lineage was significant in God's plan, as his descendant became instrumental in calling Judah to faith during a critical military crisis. His mention in Scripture underscores how God worked through faithful Levite families to deliver His people and strengthen their trust in His deliverance.
Biography
Mattaniah was a Levite who lived during the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. He was the grandfather of Jahaziel, a Levite who was filled with the Spirit of the Lord and prophesied before the king and the people of Judah. Jahaziel encouraged Jehoshaphat and the people not to fear the approaching armies of the Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites, assuring them that the battle belonged to the Lord. As a result, Jehoshaphat and the people worshipped the Lord, and the next day, they witnessed the Lord's deliverance as their enemies turned against each other (2Ch.20.14-24). Mattaniah is only mentioned in this context as the father of the prophet Jahaziel.
