Mehuman מְהוּמָן
One of King Ahasuerus' seven eunuchs.
Who is Mehuman in the Bible?
Mehuman was one of seven eunuchs who served in the court of King Ahasuerus, the Persian ruler mentioned in the book of Esther (Est. 1:10). When the king held a great feast, he commanded Mehuman and the other six eunuchs to bring Queen Vashti before him so he could display her beauty to his nobles and people. Although Mehuman's appearance in Scripture is brief, his role illustrates the significant position eunuchs held in the Persian palace, as they enjoyed direct access to the king and were responsible for executing his most important commands. Mehuman's mention in this pivotal scene marks the beginning of the events that led to Queen Vashti's removal and Esther's rise to the throne, making him part of the chain of circumstances through which God's providence protected the Jewish people.
Biography
Mehuman was one of the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, the Persian king who ruled over a vast empire from India to Ethiopia. In the book of Esther, King Ahasuerus summoned these seven eunuchs—Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas—to bring Queen Vashti before him during a great feast, so that he could display her beauty to the people and nobles (Est.1.10-11). However, Queen Vashti refused to come, leading to her removal as queen and the search for a new queen, which ultimately led to Esther becoming queen. Mehuman's role in this narrative highlights the power and influence of the eunuchs in the Persian court, as they had direct access to the king and were entrusted with carrying out his commands.
