Meshullam מְשֻׁלָּם
A leader summoned by Ezra to help teach the Law.
Who is Meshullam in the Bible?
Meshullam was a Jewish leader summoned by Ezra to assist in teaching God's Law to the people of Jerusalem (Ezra 8:16). After Ezra led a group of exiles back from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes, he discovered that many Israelites, including priests and Levites, had intermarried with surrounding nations and adopted foreign practices. Meshullam answered Ezra's call to help restore obedience to God's commandments and guide the community toward repentance. His role demonstrates the importance of spiritual leadership during a critical period of Jewish restoration and religious reformation in the post-exilic community.
Biography
Meshullam is mentioned in the book of Ezra as one of the leaders summoned by Ezra to assist in teaching the Law to the people (Ezr.8.16). Ezra, a priest and scribe, led a group of exiles back to Jerusalem during the reign of King Artaxerxes of Persia. Upon arriving in Jerusalem, Ezra discovered that many of the people, including priests and Levites, had intermarried with the surrounding nations and adopted their practices. To address this issue, Ezra called for the leaders, including Meshullam, to help him teach the Law to the people and guide them in repentance and obedience to God's commands.
