Prophet who confronted victorious Israelite army

Who is Oded in the Bible?

Oded was a prophet from Samaria who lived during the reign of King Pekah of Israel in the 8th century BC. When the Israelite army returned victorious from a campaign against Judah with 200,000 captives, Oded confronted the soldiers and their leaders, rebuking them for planning to enslave their fellow Israelites (2 Chronicles 28:9-11). He reminded them of God's judgment against their own sins and warned of God's fierce wrath if they proceeded with their plan. His bold intervention moved the Israelite leaders to release the captives, provide for their needs, and send them safely back to Judah (2 Chronicles 28:12-15). Oded's actions demonstrate the prophetic calling to uphold God's justice and compassion, even when confronting those in power.
