Pashhur פַּשְׁחוּר
Priest who opposed Jeremiah and was renamed Magor-missabib
Who is Pashhur in the Bible?
Pashhur was a priest and son of Immer who served as a chief officer in the Jerusalem temple during the time of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 20:1-2). When Jeremiah prophesied that Jerusalem would be destroyed, Pashhur opposed him by having him beaten and placed in stocks (Jeremiah 20:2). The following day, Jeremiah declared that God had renamed Pashhur as Magor-missabib, meaning "terror on every side," and prophesied that Pashhur would be taken captive to Babylon where he would die (Jeremiah 20:3-6). Pashhur's story illustrates the conflict between false religious authority and true prophecy, and serves as a warning against those who oppose God's word and mislead the people.
Biography
Pashhur was a priest, the son of Immer, who opposed the prophet Jeremiah, according to Jeremiah 20. He held the position of chief officer in the temple. When he heard Jeremiah prophesying that Jerusalem would be destroyed, Pashhur had Jeremiah beaten and put in the stocks. The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah, the prophet told him that God had renamed him Magor-missabib, which means "terror on every side." Jeremiah prophesied that Pashhur and his friends would go into captivity and die in Babylon as punishment for their false prophecies and leading the people astray.
