Son of Gedaliah, an official who opposed Jeremiah

Who is Pashhur in the Bible?

Pashhur was the son of Gedaliah and one of the officials in Jerusalem during the final days of the kingdom of Judah (Jer. 38:1). When he heard the prophet Jeremiah declaring that the people should surrender to the Babylonians, Pashhur joined other officials in opposing this message and urging King Zedekiah to execute Jeremiah for allegedly demoralizing the soldiers and people. This Pashhur appears only once in scripture and should be distinguished from another Pashhur, a priest and son of Malchiah, who is mentioned in the same passage. His opposition to Jeremiah illustrates the political and spiritual conflict that characterized Judah's resistance to God's word in its final hours before the Babylonian conquest.
