Tanhumeth תַּנְחֻ֫מֶת
Supporter of Gedaliah after Jerusalem's fall
Who is Tanhumeth in the Bible?
Tanhumeth the Netophathite was a military leader who supported Gedaliah after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586 BC. According to 2 Kings 25:23 and Jeremiah 40:8, he was among a group of commanders, including Ishmael, Johanan, and Seraiah, who gathered at Mizpah to pledge their allegiance to Gedaliah, the governor appointed by Babylon to rule over the remaining Judeans. His role demonstrates the cooperation of surviving Jewish military leaders with the new political order in the aftermath of Jerusalem's destruction, contributing to the stabilization of Judah during the exile period.
