Temah תָּ֑מַח
Ancestor of a family of temple servants
Who is Temah in the Bible?
Temah was the ancestor of a family of temple servants, known as the Nethinim, who returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile. According to Ezra 2:53 and Nehemiah 7:55, Temah's descendants were among the groups that came back with Zerubbabel to rebuild the temple and restore Jewish worship. The temple servants were non-Israelites who performed essential maintenance and support work in the temple under the supervision of the Levites. The inclusion of Temah's family in the lists of returnees demonstrates the important role these workers played in the reconstruction of the post-exilic temple community.
