Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Who is Unnamed#3 in the Bible?

Unnamed#3 is an ancestor of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:15). This individual is one of several unnamed figures Matthew included in his account of Jesus' lineage, likely inserted to create a specific numerical pattern in the genealogy. Matthew deliberately structured his genealogy into three sets of fourteen generations (Matthew 1:17), and scholars believe he omitted certain individuals from historical records, such as kings Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah, to achieve this symmetry. The theological significance of Unnamed#3 lies not in personal deeds or characteristics, but in his role as a link in the unbroken line connecting Jesus to King David and thus establishing Jesus' legal claim to the messianic throne of Israel.

Biography

This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
