Antioch, a city in Syria where the gospel first reached Gentiles and the believers were first called Christians.

Where is Antioch in the Bible?

Antioch was a major city in ancient Syria, located in what is now southern Turkey near the Syrian border. In the New Testament, Antioch became significant as the place where the gospel first reached Gentiles in large numbers and where followers of Jesus were first called "Christians" (Acts 11:26). The church at Antioch, described in the book of Acts, became an important center for early Christian missionary work and sent out Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey. Paul also confronted Peter at Antioch over the issue of Jewish and Gentile believers eating together (Galatians 2:11-14), making it a key location for understanding how the early church navigated its identity as it grew beyond Jewish communities.
