Ekron, one of the five principal Philistine cities, located in southwestern Canaan.
Where is Ekron in the Bible?
Ekron was one of the five major Philistine cities, located in southwestern Canaan in what is now modern-day Israel, near the coastal plain between Gaza and Joppa. The city appears prominently in the Old Testament books of Joshua, Judges, Jeremiah, Amos, and Zephaniah, often mentioned alongside other Philistine centers like Gaza, Ashdod, Gath, and Ashkelon. Ekron is particularly remembered in biblical narrative as a center of idol worship, notably for the god Baal-Zebub, and as a location where the Ark of the Covenant was briefly held after the Philistines captured it from Israel. The city served as a symbol of Philistine power and pagan influence during the period of the judges and the early Israelite monarchy, and later became the subject of prophetic judgment in the writings of the Hebrew prophets.
