Where is Horonaim in the Bible?
Horonaim was a Moabite city located in the region of Moab, east of the Dead Sea, positioned on a descending road from the Moabite plateau toward the Arabah valley. The city appears in the prophetic books of Isaiah and Jeremiah as part of God's judgments against the nation of Moab, with both prophets referencing the "descent" or "way down" to Horonaim as a route used during times of conflict. According to historical records, Horonaim was later captured by the Jewish ruler Alexander Janneus during the second century BC. While the exact modern location remains uncertain, scholars believe it stood strategically on one of the major downward routes from the Moabite plateau, making it significant both militarily and as a focal point in biblical prophecy against Moab's judgment.

Mesha (MS) says he was bidden by Chemosh to "go down" and fight against Choronem. Probably, therefore, it lay on one of the roads leading down from the Moabite plateau to the Arabah. It is mentioned by Josephus as having been taken by Alexander Janneus (Ant., XIII, xv, 4). Hyrcanus promised to restore it and the rest to Aretas (XIV, i, 4). There is no indication that in early times it was ever possessed by Israel. Buhl (GAP 272 f) thinks it may be represented by some significant ruins near Wady ed-Dera`a (Wady Kerak).
