Where is Mephaath in the Bible?

Mephaath was a Levitical city located in the territory of Reuben, east of the Jordan River in what is now Jordan. According to Joshua 21:37 and 1 Chronicles 6:79, it was assigned to the Merarite Levites as a city of refuge. The town appears again in the Book of Jeremiah as a Moabite city included in a prophecy of judgment against Moab (Jeremiah 48:21), suggesting it may have changed hands or populations over time. In ancient times, it was known to early church scholars Eusebius and Jerome as a site occupied by a Roman garrison, though its exact location has been lost to modern scholarship.
