Punon standard
an village, North of Petra, in the desert, where convicts were mining copper, called Phinon or Phainon. These are doubtless identical.
Where is Punon in the Bible?
Punon was a settlement in the Sinai Peninsula located in the region north of modern-day Petra, in what is now southern Jordan. According to Numbers 33:42-43, Punon was one of the camping sites where the Israelites stopped during their forty-year wilderness wanderings after leaving Egypt, situated between the stations of Zalmonah and Oboth. The site was historically known as a copper mining center where forced laborers extracted ore, and scholars identify it with the ancient settlement of Phainon mentioned in classical sources. Punon's mention in the biblical itinerary underscores the route and duration of Israel's desert journey as they made their way toward the Promised Land.
