Where is Tarshish in the Bible?
Tarshish was a distant maritime city known for its great wealth and extensive trade networks, possibly located in southern Spain or the western Mediterranean region. The city appears throughout the Bible as a symbol of distant, prosperous lands, mentioned in connection with King Solomon's merchant ships in 1 Kings 10:22 and described in Isaiah 23:1 as a major trading center. Tarshish is most famously associated with the prophet Jonah, who attempted to flee to Tarshish to escape God's call, boarding a ship headed there before being swallowed by a great fish. The biblical references to Tarshish emphasize themes of wealth, human ambition, and the futility of running from God's purposes, making it significant both geographically and theologically in Scripture.
