Tob (or Ish-tob), a region east of the Jordan River where Jephthah fled and later recruited mercenaries to fight the Ammonites (Judg. 11:3, 5; 2 Sam. 10:6, 8).

Where is Tob in the Bible?

Tob was a region located east of the Jordan River in ancient Palestine, in the area that corresponds to modern-day Syria or the Transjordanian highlands. The place is primarily known from the book of Judges, where it served as a refuge for Jephthah, who fled there after being rejected by his family and became a leader of mercenaries. From Tob, Jephthah later gathered these fighting men to defend the Israelites against an invasion by the Ammonites, eventually becoming a judge of Israel. The region also appears in 2 Samuel as a place from which the Ammonites hired mercenaries during their conflict with King David, highlighting its reputation as a source of military forces in the ancient Near East.
