Light precedes measurement, day precedes the sun. Whatever meaning the sun will have, it is derivative: the or was here first, called by the One who is himself the source of all illumination.

YHWH identified as or: not the giver of light but light itself. The parallelism with 'my salvation' (yishi) ties or to the full scope of divine rescue. The rhetorical question 'whom shall I fear?' shows that or here is not aesthetic but protective and personal. The one who is or to the psalmist is the one who answers the psalmist's fear. This is the OT's most compressed or theology: the source of light and the source of salvation are the same person.

The or of the divine word (dabar) as the practical illumination of daily life: a lamp (ner) for the next step, or for the path ahead. The double image — lamp for feet, light for path — covers both the immediate decision and the longer direction. Psalm 119 is the longest meditation on the divine word, and it anchors its entire case in this or: without the word, the way is dark. With it, the path is visible even through the night.
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.
The messianic or breaking on those in darkness and death-shadow: or gadol (great light) as the defining characteristic of the coming king (Isa 9:6-7). Matthew 4:16 quotes this exactly at the opening of Jesus' Galilean ministry. The contrast is total: not a small brightening but a great or on people who walked in choshek (darkness) and tsalmaveth (death-shadow). The or does not merely illuminate — it saves.

אוֹר (or) gives the preacher a major biblical metaphor for the character of God and the movement of history. The or of Genesis 1:3 is not a physical theory — it is the announcement that the universe is governed by the God who speaks light into being and sees it as good. Later theological uses of or in the OT traces back to this originating act. When Psalm 27:1 calls YHWH 'my or', the psalmist is claiming a personal relationship with the God whose first act was to speak light.
When Isaiah calls the Servant 'a light to the nations' (or la-goyim, Isa 49:6), he is placing the Servant's mission inside the creation arc: the or that began at Gen 1:3 is now moving through the Servant to the ends of the earth. אוֹר (or) is a noun from the root aleph-vav-resh, whose primary sense is to be luminous or to give light. The verb form (H215, or, to shine) and the noun form (H216, or, light) are closely related. The word is paired with its antonym choshek (H2822, darkness) from its first appearance in Gen 1:4. In the Psalms, or frequently appears in construct chains: or-YHWH (the light of the Lord), or hayyim (the light of life, Ps 56:13), or panim (the light of the face — divine favor, Ps 4:6).
The abundance of construct forms shows that or in the OT is rarely abstract: it is usually the light of something or someone. The NT's equivalent is phos (G5457), and John 1:4-9 is the explicit Johannine or-theology: 'In him was life, and the life was the phos of men.'
The NT inherits or theology wholesale through the Greek phos (G5457). John 1:4-5 opens the Gospel with or: 'In him was life, and the life was the phos of men.
