2 Timothy 2:14-19

Rightly Handling God's Word: Faithful Ministry Against Destructive Doctrine

Faithful ministry protects the gospel through careful teaching and rejection of corrupt doctrine.

Scripture Text

2:14 Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin.

2:15 Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth.

2:16 But avoid irreverent, empty chatter, which will only lead to more ungodliness,

2:17 And the talk of such men will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

2:18 Who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some.

2:19 Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.”

Watch Out

  • Do not interpret Paul's warning against word disputes as a rejection of theological clarity; the warning targets empty speculation that destroys faith.
  • Do not assume that doctrinal error is harmless; Paul compares false teaching to gangrene because of its destructive spread.
  • Do not detach God's firm foundation from the call to holiness; those who belong to the Lord must turn away from wickedness.
  • Do not reduce 'rightly handling the word of truth' to rhetorical skill; the emphasis is faithful interpretation and proclamation of God's revealed truth.
  • Do not interpret Paul's warning against quarrels as opposition to all theological discussion; he condemns destructive disputes that distort truth.
  • Do not assume that doctrinal precision is optional; Paul explicitly commands careful handling of the word.
  • Do not conclude that the presence of false teachers means God's church has failed; Paul affirms that God's foundation remains secure.
  • Do not misinterpret God's knowledge of his people as removing the call to moral holiness.
  • Do not overlook the seriousness of doctrinal error; Paul compares its spread to disease.
